For a cleaner home, there are some cleaning supplies that could be considered essential. Chances are, you probably own much of what you need already, but if not, here are just a few of the items that you need in your home, and pronto.
#1: A broom and dustpan set
Dirt, dust, and crumbs will accumulate through your home on a daily basis, and while you could drag your vacuum cleaner out of the cupboard every time you need a cleanup, you can make your life easier with a broom and dustpan set instead. Be sure to buy a broom that comes with an adjustable handle – this way, you won’t have to bend down and hurt your back when cleaning – and be sure it comes with a deep and wide-rimmed dustpan to gather as much dust and debris as possible.
#2: A decent vacuum cleaner
You will have a vacuum cleaner in your home already, but is it up to the job? If you have an older model, it might not be as effective as it used to be. Of course, it might just mean that you need to change or clean the filters, but then again, your home might benefit from a vacuum cleaner that has a more powerful suction. Still, whatever vacuum cleaner you’re using, be sure to make the correct use of the included attachments. The motorized power nuzzle is best used on your rugs and carpets, for example, whereas the brushed attachment is best for your hardwood floors, and the crevice tool is used for those hard to reach places in your home. And if you have pets, be sure to purchase a vacuum cleaner that has the necessary pet hair attachments to make light work of the fur your dogs and cats leave behind.
#3: A microfiber cloth
There are all kinds of cleaning cloths on the market, of course, but for a more thorough clean, we recommend microfiber. Not only are they better at lifting the dust, dirt, and grime in your home than regular cloths, but there is no need to use potentially toxic chemicals with them, as they work just as well with water. Some manufacturers have created microfiber cloths for specific purposes, so while you could buy an all-in-one variant, you might want to purchase something that contains fibers that are better suited to specific tasks, such as scrubbing your floors and dusting your living room surfaces.
#4: A high-quality toilet brush
Needless to say, without a toilet brush that is up to the job, the inside of your toilet bowl isn’t going to look or smell very attractive. While there are hundreds of toilet brush types on the market, not all are made equal. When buying, look for something that is ergonomically designed to get to those hard to reach places in your toilet, and for extra hygiene, consider something that contains antimicrobial agents built into the fibers.
#5: A carpet and upholstery stain remover
Accidents happen, right? It could be a spilled glass of wine on your living room carpet. It could be a juice spill on the sofa left by one of your children. And if you do have dogs and cats living with you in your home, then you don’t need us to tell you of the unfortunate stains they can leave behind on your floors and seating areas. So, be sure to have a bottle of stain remover on hand for any such deposits that appear in your home, and be sure to deal with such stains as soon as possible to make lighter work of them.
#6: A disinfectant spray
Germs: they get everywhere, and when not dealt with, they could cause you and your family to get sick. So, be sure to buy a disinfectant spray from your local supermarket, and kill those nasty germs and bacterias before they have a chance to spread around your home. While your bathroom and kitchen are the obvious places to put it to good use, you might still clean every commonly used surface in your home with the spray for good measure. Hint: while you could buy something from the store, you might also want to create your own disinfectant using a mixture of water and vinegar. Check online to find out more.
#7: A bottle of washing up liquid
Okay, so you know that washing up liquid is great for removing the grease and grime from your pots and pans, but did you know that you can also use it for cleaning your bathroom and kitchen floors, de-griming your patio furniture, erasing greasy stains on clothes, and giving your jewelry a shine? It has many uses, so don’t assume your humble bottle of washing up liquid is only good for what is needed in your kitchen sink.
#8: A bottle of surgical spirit
Also known as ‘rubbing alcohol,’ this can often be found in first aid boxes and is used for disinfecting minor scrapes and wounds. However, it can also be used as an all-purpose cleaner, with a range of uses. It can make light work of crayon marks your children leave on the walls. It can remove any sticky substances found on your home’s decor. It’s excellent for de-greasing stoves and other kitchen surfaces. And it’s great for making your mirror’s shine too! In short, a bottle of surgical spirit is near-essential for any cleaning kit you use in your home.
#9: A pair of rubber gloves
Never ever clean without having a pair of rubber gloves on your hands. Not only do they provide a protective barrier from the harshness of toxic chemicals, but they also shield your hands from the grime and other bits of nastiness that you are trying to eliminate when cleaning your home.
#10: A feather duster
When buying a feather duster for your home, purchase something that incorporates ostrich feathers, as these contain filaments that will grab onto the dust in your home, and won’t let it go until you have given it a good shake outside. Chicken feathers are the alternative, but these aren’t as effective, and sometimes do little to give your home’s surfaces a thorough dusting.
