How To Make Hardwood Floors Shine

Hardwood floors bring a touch of class to your home. Whether they have been in your home since you bought the place, or if you have them installed yourself, you will want to make sure that you maintain your hardwood floors well. A well-looked-after hardwood floor will last for a considerable amount of time and it will really hold its value. Hardwood floors will also be of instant appeal to any potential buyers should you ever decide to sell your home.

So, when it comes to looking after your beautiful floor, it is important that you take the time and effort to bring out the best in it. Here is how to make hardwood floors shine.

Has Your Hardwood Floor Had A Finish Applied?

Before you start trying to clean or polish your hardwood floor, it is important that you know whether a finish has been applied to it. You may already know whether your hardwood floor was sealed using polyacrylic urethane finish, a paste wax, or a polyurethane finish. However, if you don’t already know, you can apply a quick test to work this out.

Find a spot on the floor that has an average amount of traffic across it. Place a drop of water on the floor. If the water beads and sits in the same position for several hours, then the floor has definitely been sealed. If the water soaks into the wood, then it has never been sealed. If this is the case, then it is vital that you never clean your hardwood floor using water as this will damage it.

To see if a paste wax has been used, rub a piece of fine steel wool on the floor very gently. If there is a grey film left on the steel wool, this would suggest that a paste wax has been used.

Maintaining Your Hardwood Floor

It is vital that you have a regular routine for cleaning and caring for your hardwood floor. A hardwood floor is durable and beautiful, however, it is not looked after in the correct way, it is likely to become dull and damaged over time.

If you have a hardwood floor or are considering getting one laid in your home. You need to be prepared to put the effort into daily maintenance of this type of floor in order to make sure that they shine.

In order to take good care of your hardwood floor, you will need a broom, dustpan, a dust mop,  a vacuum cleaner, a mop, and a microfiber mop. To create a great shine on your floor, you can use white vinegar, olive oil, and distilled water mixed in a spray bottle. You should also keep a microfiber cloth for cleaning up spills and marks that appear on your floor.

  • Always clean up spills As soon as any liquid spills onto your floor, be sure and wipe these up to avoid watermarks.
  • Clear up dirt every day make sure and sweep or vacuum your floors often. Ideally every day. You can also use a dust mop to make sure you get everything up. Cleaning your floor in this way is important, as dirty can wear down the finish of your hardwood floor.
  • Only damp mop every three months There is no need to damp mop often unless your floor becomes particularly mucky, otherwise, you just need to do this every three months.
  • Buff your floor dry after mopping Using a second, dry, microfiber mop, buff your floor dry after you have damp mopped it. This will stop watermarks and streaking.

In order to create a buffed shine using the olive oil and white vinegar, mix 1 cup of the vinegar with 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a spray bottle and then top up with distilled water. Spray this across your hardwood floor lightly. Start in the furthest corner of the room and work your way to the door mopping the liquid as you go. If you can, go with the grain of the wood.

Allow the floor to completely dry before gently buffing the floor using a microfiber cloth. This will give your hardwood floor a beautiful, wet, and shiny finish that will look great.
