The main reason behind the clogging of the holes is the mineral deposits. If you do not clean it at regular intervals, the shower head tends to choke.

Another important reason why you should clean your shower head is that the clogged shower head breeds many harmful bacteria. You will be shocked to know that a recent study has discovered that the shower heads contain a bacteria called Mycobacterium which can cause lung diseases. These bacteria make their home in the slimy film residing inside the shower holes.

Therefore, for the sake of your family health, you should definitely clean your shower head at least twice a month along with the rest of your bathroom.

First thing you need to do is to check the blockage. If the water is sprinkling unevenly and there are only a few plugged holes, then you can clean it without even removing it. However, if the blockage is severe and almost all the holes are clogged then you will have to remove the head and clean it deeply.

Here are both the ways to clean your shower head:

Clean a Shower Head Without Removing It From The Arm

If the blockage in your shower head is not that bad or your head is made of delicate metal like steel then, you can try this method to clean it easily. 

Things You Will Need:

White Vinegar, baking soda, plastic bag, a tight rubber band

Step 1: Fill the plastic bag with vinegar and baking soda solution. Then, put a tight rubber band around the shower arm. You can loop it one or two times so that it doesn’t slip.

Step 2: Now, carefully secure the vinegar bag onto the shower head with the help of the rubber band around the arm you’ve just tied before. Make sure the bag doesn’t drop.

Step 3: Now, wait for a few hours or leave it overnight. Then, remove the plastic bag from the shower head and turn it on. All the mineral deposits will be flushed. Clean it with a wet sponge.

Clean Shower Head By Removing It From The Arm

You should try this method if the blockage is really bad and the shower head is severely clogged. Also, if the above mentioned vinegar rinse doesn’t work then also you have to perform a deep cleaning using this method.

Step 1: Using the necessary tools, carefully remove the shower head from the shower arm. Make sure you don’t damage the finishing. Use a soft cloth or rag with the tool to avoid any scratches.

Step 2: Wash the shower head thoroughly by placing it under the tap. All the loosen dirt and deposit will be removed from the opening pipe.

Step 3: Use some vinegar solution to scrub off the mineral deposit. Then, with the help of a toothbrush, rub it gently to remove the residue.

Step 4: With the help of a toothpick or needle, clean the tiny holes and unclog them properly.

Step 5: Now, take enough vinegar in a bowl and add 3 tablespoons of baking soda to it. Stir the solution and soak the parts of shower heads for a few hours. You can also leave it overnight. In this step, the clogged holes will be deeply cleaned.

Step 6: After a few hours, rinse the shower head properly with a toothbrush and wipe it using a towel.

Step 7: Reinstall the shower head. For this, wrap a plumbing tape around the shower arm in order to seal it properly, then fix the shower head properly to the arm. Use the tools carefully and avoid scratching the surface.
